Zoey Erickson Achieves NCIDQ Certification, Strengthening His Role at CNH Architects

At CNH Architects, we believe that great design begins with a deep understanding. That belief is embodied by interior designer Zoey Erickson, who recently earned his NCIDQ certification—a nationally recognized credential that reflects both technical expertise and professional integrity in the field of interior design.

Zoey joined CNH Architects in 2024, bringing with him a passion for thoughtful, community-centered design. His path to certification wasn’t just about checking a box—it was about pushing himself to grow, to learn, and to better serve the clients and communities he designs for.

“It was a lot of work and time spent studying, and I learned so much about the industry. By attaining my NCIDQ certification, I have a greater knowledge of the profession – and the industry as a whole,” Zoey explains. Now officially certified in the state of Minnesota, he is already seeing the impact of his expanded expertise.

His interest in design began at North Dakota State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design. Initially focused on residential and historic preservation work, Zoey’s perspective shifted during an internship in Miles City, Montana. There, he discovered the opportunities of commercial interior design—a field he now thrives in.

Since joining CNH, Zoey has contributed to a wide range of projects, including educational facilities, government buildings, and tenant improvement plans. His decision to pursue NCIDQ certification was driven by a desire to bring even more value to these projects.

The certification process is no small feat. It involves three rigorous exams:

  • IDFX (Interior Design Fundamentals Exam) – covering foundational knowledge like codes, building systems, and design theory.
  • IDPX (Interior Design Professional Exam) – focusing on real-world application, including space planning and materials.
  • PRAC (Practicum Exam) – testing practical skills in project management, ethics, and contract administration.

Zoey approached the exams with a strategic mindset: take the IDFX in the spring, then tackle the remaining two in the fall.

“Right after passing the first exam, I got pulled into the biggest project I’ve ever worked on,” he says. “It was intense, but I kept studying and managed to pass the final two exams while still meeting project deadlines.”

We’re proud to celebrate Zoey’s achievement and excited to see how his continued growth will shape the future of our projects and partnerships.

BURNSVILLE FIRE STATION NO. 1

CNH’s largest fire station to date, the City of Burnsville’s Fire Station No. 1 is home to a crew of all full-time firefighters and more than 44,000 SF with 10 apparatus bays. Firefighter safety was one of nine top priorities for the station. Multiple contamination zones and a designated de-contamination area will allow firefighters to keep contaminated equipment and clothing in the apparatus bay until decontaminated. Another priority in the design was firefighter mental health. A warning system that slowly ramps up with alert tones and lighting while only alerting responding staff ensures firefighters are not awoken in an abrupt manner. The station includes areas for relaxation with different lighting to promote natural sleep rhythms, as well as a yoga studio and meditation garden. Extensive firefighter training features including Firefighter 1 and advanced training elements are another highlight of the station.
