As the sunlight dimmed, the anticipation grew as the first rocket whistled up through the warm air. Near and distant cheering could be heard, as colorful bursts of light and movement gradually took over the sky. The firework show was, for some citizens, a quintessential form of patriotism.

If you were one of the thousands who concluded their Fourth of July holiday in Coon Rapids, MN – you may already know how impressive this top voted pyrotechnic display was. What you may not know is that the 2023 show was launched from a new place, for the first time, and from a building that is the first of its kind within the state of Minnesota.

When CNH Architects began designing the Coon Rapids Fire Station No. 3 project, they were met with a rare request: the ability to launch fireworks from the rooftop. The location would allow for a secure setup of the fireworks, without the need to cordon off the site days in advance. It also allowed for the fireworks display to remain in its long-time location, which was now the ideal spot for the new fire station. So, in collaboration with the fire department, a firesafe rooftop was carefully constructed, with features such as a safety-shelter and an entire system that floods then drains the area with a thin layer of water. The concept was designed using guidelines from the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s office and standards developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). CNH Architects’ staff enjoyed the challenge of researching, and designing for, this distinct rooftop use.

This technical ingenuity is not commonly seen at municipal festivals, but with the ability to provide spectators with enhanced viewing (and from longer distances) it would be no surprise if this popular event were to draw an even greater audience in the future.
