Brooklyn Park Fire Station No. 2: A Modern Hub for Safety, Training, and Community

The new Brooklyn Park Fire Station No. 2, designed by CNH Architects, is a thoughtfully crafted facility that enhances emergency response, prioritizes firefighter wellness, and strengthens community ties. Strategically located, the station serves as an anchor for safety and preparedness.

A Site Designed for Safety and Community

The station’s placement was carefully chosen to welcome visitors entering civic campus from the west, creating a strong presence. Its layout ensures safer and more efficient emergency responses onto Zane Avenue North, a key road in Brooklyn Park.

To support the needs of both the community and city staff:

  • Secure staff parking is separated from public areas, enhancing operational efficiency.
  • Additional parking stalls and upgraded drainage improves the adjacent Community Activity Center (CAC) lot, benefiting the broader community.

Faster Response Times Through Smart Design

Every second counts in an emergency, and Station No. 2’s design reflects that urgency:

  • An efficient internal layout ensures firefighters can respond quickly from any part of the building.
  • Two fire poles, one in each dorm wing, provide rapid access to the apparatus bays.
  • Four-fold apparatus bay doors open quickly and safely, reducing response time and improving visibility.

Built-In Training for Real-World Readiness

Training is central to the station’s mission, and the facility includes a wide range of features to support it:

Dual Training Towers

  • Two towers with different layouts enable various training scenarios, including training between the towers.
  • Fire suppression standpipes support hose advancement and stairwell evolutions.
  • The east tower features multiple balconies and openings at varying heights for ladder training evolutions and advance technical rescue practice.

Training Mezzanine

  • Floor openings simulate confined space rescue scenarios.
  • An open area with smoke piping supports search and rescue maze training.
  • Simulated fire alarm and fire suppression riser provide hands-on experience with real-world systems.

Training Room

  • A large classroom with an operable wall offers flexible space for department-wide or small-group training.
  • Adjacent breakout and control rooms allow for observation and specialized instruction.

Outdoor training areas around the apparatus bays, along with integrated training elements throughout the building, ensure that firefighters can train onsite and remain ready to respond to city needs at a moment’s notice.

Prioritizing Firefighter Health and Wellness

Firefighting is demanding, and Station No. 2 is designed to support the physical and mental well-being of its personnel with the following features:

  • Hot and cold zones reduce toxin exposure, with dedicated decontamination areas to promote health.
  • A sound-separated residential wing offers a quiet, restorative space for rest between calls.
  • Circadian lighting supports natural wake and sleep cycles by following the sun’s range of light color temperatures throughout the day.
  • Low level lighting reduces the startle response for overnight calls.
  • A fitness and wellness/yoga space encourages physical conditioning and improved mental health.

A Command Center for Crisis Management

This fire station also houses an Emergency Operations Center (EOC). This is a large, flexible space which supports emergency scenarios. The facility houses a large quantity of monitors for simultaneous viewing of video feeds and data, while an adjacent breakout room keeps city leadership close for real-time communication and coordination.

Brooklyn Park Fire Station No. 2 is a forward-thinking facility that reflects the city’s commitment to safety in the community. With its strategic design, integrated training features, and a focus on firefighter wellness, it sets a new standard for what a modern fire station can be.

BURNSVILLE FIRE STATION NO. 1

CNH’s largest fire station to date, the City of Burnsville’s Fire Station No. 1 is home to a crew of all full-time firefighters and more than 44,000 SF with 10 apparatus bays. Firefighter safety was one of nine top priorities for the station. Multiple contamination zones and a designated de-contamination area will allow firefighters to keep contaminated equipment and clothing in the apparatus bay until decontaminated. Another priority in the design was firefighter mental health. A warning system that slowly ramps up with alert tones and lighting while only alerting responding staff ensures firefighters are not awoken in an abrupt manner. The station includes areas for relaxation with different lighting to promote natural sleep rhythms, as well as a yoga studio and meditation garden. Extensive firefighter training features including Firefighter 1 and advanced training elements are another highlight of the station.
