Peace Officers Memorial Restoration

May 15, 2020 was Peace Officer Memorial Day and an event was held at the Peace Officers Memorial on the State Capitol Grounds in St. Paul.

This also marked the unveiling of the newly restored Peace Officers Memorial, work which was recently finished by CNH Architects, along with engineering firms EDI Mechanical & Electrical, Larson Structural, and Rehder Civil. Versacon served as the project’s general contractor.

A prominent element of the Peace Officers Memorial is a thin blue lighting feature, which symbolizes and honors the sacrifices law enforcement officials make every day.

Restoration work on the memorial included the following:

  • Replacement of “Thin Blue Line” lighting feature
  • Removal and resetting of existing granite pavers on new concrete slab
  • Extensive fountain repairs including pump, piping, waterproofing, and lighting replacement
  • Colonnade restoration including cast stone cleaning and installation of new protective zinc coated copper roof cap
  • Ornamental bronze stair handrail restoration and repairs

 

About the Peace Officers Memorial
On May 18, 1882, St. Paul Police Officer Daniel O’Connell was killed in the line of duty. He was the first officer in Minnesota who sacrificed his life while serving the citizens of this state. This memorial honors all those who have made this same sacrifice throughout our state as they carried out their duties to make our lives better and safer. It honors all of our peace officers who serve our communities with great pride and dedication. This memorial is designed to pay tribute to
 all of our peace officers, past and present, but especially to those who gave their lives for us. Their courage and their sacrifice has not been forgotten. Designers: Fred Richter and Mark Wentzell; dedicated on June of 1995.

BURNSVILLE FIRE STATION NO. 1

CNH’s largest fire station to date, the City of Burnsville’s Fire Station No. 1 is home to a crew of all full-time firefighters and more than 44,000 SF with 10 apparatus bays. Firefighter safety was one of nine top priorities for the station. Multiple contamination zones and a designated de-contamination area will allow firefighters to keep contaminated equipment and clothing in the apparatus bay until decontaminated. Another priority in the design was firefighter mental health. A warning system that slowly ramps up with alert tones and lighting while only alerting responding staff ensures firefighters are not awoken in an abrupt manner. The station includes areas for relaxation with different lighting to promote natural sleep rhythms, as well as a yoga studio and meditation garden. Extensive firefighter training features including Firefighter 1 and advanced training elements are another highlight of the station.
