Bloomington, MN—The new Fire Station No. 4 at 4201 West 84th Street, completed in summer 2023, received an Award of Excellence (Project of the Year – Publicly Funded Construction) in January from the Minnesota Construction Association.

CNH Architects designed and Terra Construction built the new station, which is 25,000 square feet and includes three truck bays, office space, a training room, living accommodations and firefighters’ health and safety amenities.

“The new Fire Station No. 4 allows us to provide better coverage to the community,” said Jay Forster, Bloomington’s assistant fire chief. “Since it opened August 1, 2023, Station 4 crews have responded to nearly 1,400 calls, including one just a few blocks from the new station. With the station staffed 24-hours by full-time and part-time firefighters, the crew and two chiefs were able to arrive on the scene quickly and rescue two people with disabilities who were trapped by the fire. Both people made a full recovery. This is just one example of the benefits of the newly constructed fire station.”

Like most of the City’s six fire stations, Fire Station No. 4 was first constructed more than 50 years ago. Recognizing the age of the facilities, Bloomington performed a space needs study for each station. Station No. 4 rose to the top of the list.

“Deb Williams, Bloomington’s assistant maintenance superintendent, and Tim Barrett and Jay Forster with the Bloomington Fire Department were champions for the city and its residents throughout the project,” said Ben Newlin, Terra Construction project executive. “They were fiscally responsible and very thoughtful in the decisions to meet the needs of the community and the Fire Department for the years to come.”

The Minnesota Construction Association (MCA) is nonprofit organization that provides networking, recognition, and education opportunities for the construction industry. Terra Construction submitted the project for award consideration.

BURNSVILLE FIRE STATION NO. 1

CNH’s largest fire station to date, the City of Burnsville’s Fire Station No. 1 is home to a crew of all full-time firefighters and more than 44,000 SF with 10 apparatus bays. Firefighter safety was one of nine top priorities for the station. Multiple contamination zones and a designated de-contamination area will allow firefighters to keep contaminated equipment and clothing in the apparatus bay until decontaminated. Another priority in the design was firefighter mental health. A warning system that slowly ramps up with alert tones and lighting while only alerting responding staff ensures firefighters are not awoken in an abrupt manner. The station includes areas for relaxation with different lighting to promote natural sleep rhythms, as well as a yoga studio and meditation garden. Extensive firefighter training features including Firefighter 1 and advanced training elements are another highlight of the station.
