Ziegler CAT is a leading provider of construction equipment and services, with a network of facilities across the Midwest. The company has been investing in its facilities to improve its efficiency and accommodate its workforce, with the latest project being the expansion and renovation of its Altoona, IA location.
The project, designed by CNH Architects, involved reconfiguring the office area, renovating the break room and training room, and expanding the shop areas. The result is a modern and functional facility that reflects the company’s culture and values.
Upon entering the facility, a desk reconfiguration creates a sense of openness and alignment with the current function of this space. Ascending the stairs ahead, a renovated break room and training room come into view. The new café draws on the features of the Ziegler headquarters in Bloomington, MN, creating a sense of continuity and cohesion. As noted in this previous feature, a well-designed lunchroom can have many benefits for the workplace. It can provide a space for employees to relax, recharge, and socialize with their colleagues, improving their mental and physical well-being, as well as their sense of belonging and teamwork. Ziegler CAT and CNH Architects collaborated to create a space that reflects the company’s identity. The colors, materials, furniture, and lighting work together to enhance an inviting space for employees and visitors alike, facilitating collaboration and innovation. By offering different seating options, such as tables, booths, sofas, or bar stools, the café accommodates various group sizes and activities – sparking the connection between employees while also giving them a space to relax.
The training room is located next to the break room and is equipped to facilitate learning and presentations. The training room also has a modular furniture system, which allows the space to be reconfigured according to the needs of the users.
The shop areas were expanded to accommodate the current needs of the company. The shop areas are intentionally brighter, with skylights that allow natural light to flood the workspaces, creating a bright and pleasant environment. The flooring is self-polishing, as the embedded metals react to the friction of heavy equipment moving in and out. Over time, the metals acquire a rich patina that adds character to the space. An integrated pump system provides convenient access to oil from a dedicated oil room, while a drainage system ensures the shop stays clean and dry. Extra-large garage doors accommodate the largest equipment and rigs, making the shop versatile and efficient.
The shop areas also feature a safety system, which includes fire alarms, sprinklers, and emergency exits. The shop areas also have a ventilation system, which ensures the air quality and temperature are optimal for the workers.
The expansion and renovation project of the Altoona, IA location is a testament to Ziegler CAT’s commitment to improving its facilities and services. The project showcases the collaboration and innovation of Ziegler CAT and CNH Architects, who created a space that reflects the company’s culture, values, and identity. The project also demonstrates the benefits of architectural transformation, which can enhance the efficiency, functionality, and aesthetics of a space.
