CNH Architects is currently working on a project at Elk River Lutheran Church in Elk River, Minnesota.
Â
Both interior and exterior design work are under construction and slated to be completed in December. Nichiha composite panels are being used on the exterior. The interior upgrades include carpet and LVT flooring, acoustic wall panels to assist with sound in the sanctuary. A chancel, similar to a stage, is being added to the sanctuary as well, complete with a custom cross for the back of the chancel.
Â
A recessed light on the exterior of the building is being used to emulate a cross– a feature which project architect and CNH Senior Associate Jessica Johnson Kreps describes as “unique” and not a design feature that CNH typically has an opportunity to use in projects.
Of course, religious projects such as churches are not the typical for CNH. Where private commercial clients and municipal clients have set budgets, church congregations have to “raise” the funds to support their project. Architects, designers, consultants, and contractors work with a church committee to make decisions. The Elk River project includes a second phase, which will be completed at a later date when funds can again be allocated for design and construction.
Â
According to Johnson Kreps, inflation and rising costs, along with lead times for materials led to a cost estimate that was too high, so the group went into redesign and created phases to help with the costs.
